Smiles by Design approaches every patient with the expectation that its relationship will be for the long term. Smiles by Design knows that its reputation will depend on how well its treatment, recommendations, and advice hold up over time.
Therein lies the heart of our philosophy of practice; Smiles by Design is not looking to simply solve immediate problems and send its patients out the door. It focused on helping its patients achieve a high level of maintainable oral health. Sometimes there are immediate problems to be solved. That is often the reason for the initial visit to Smiles by Design office. We strive to look further than that.

Prevention & Treatment of Gum Disease<
Routine preventative dentistry needs to be a lifelong commitment of both the patient and dental staff. Through regularly scheduled preventative treatment, many expensive and time consuming procedures can be avoided. Preventative dentistry includes periodic examinations, hygiene therapy (cleanings), sealants and fluoride treatments for both children & adults.
Periodontal Disease (Gum disease)<
The main cause of periodontal disease is bacteria in the form of a sticky, colorless plaque that constantly forms on your teeth; however, many other factors can cause periodontal (gum) disease or influence its progression.
Root Canal Treatment<
Tooth decay, trauma or cracks can cause the nerves of teeth to die. When this occurs your tooth can often still be saved with root canal therapy. Severe pain, swelling, sensitivity to hot or cold, or a darkening tooth, are signs that a root canal problem exists. Dentists must use x-rays to confirm proper treatment.
During root canal treatment, the dentist cleans out the infected nerve area within the roots. After all the nerve has been removed, the canals are sealed to prevent a future root canal infection. In most cases, your root canal procedure can be finished in one visit.
After a root canal, a patient could experience little discomfort from the work that was done inside the tooth. In most cases a pain reliever will minimize any discomfort. Teeth treated with root canal therapy need to be restored afterwards. In most cases it is restored with a build-up. post and core and a crown over the tooth to protect it from further damage.
Tooth Whitening<
(Bleaching) brightens teeth that are discolored or stained. The dentist dispenses a system for you to use at home.
Metal Free Fillings<
The days of silver (mercury) fillings are now nearly obsolete at some dental practices. Smiles by Design use no silver (mercury), and will be happy to assist you in replacing older, failing amalgam (silver) restorations that cause teeth to crack.
Smiles by Design has invested in the best technology the industry has to offer to bring you a higher quality. The CEREC is a superior means of restoring your tooth to near original form.
Crown/Inlay/Onlay<
An Inlay restoration (filling) consisting of a solid substance fitted to a cavity in a tooth and cemented into place. An Onlay is the same as an Inlay, except that it extends to replace a cusp. Crowns are onlays which completely cover all surfaces of a tooth. Most crowns, inlays, and onlays can be made in one visit with the state-of-the-art Cerec 3D CAD-CAM. The Cerec 3D then transmits the data to our own Milling Chamber which creates your very own personalized, custom, precision fitting crown, inlay or onlay.
This means NO impressions, NO temporaries and NO need to return 3 weeks later for a second appointment. We can do it all in one visit. Smiles by Design has invested in this technology to bring you a higher quality of care.
Veneers<
Veneers are thin custom-made shells (Porcelain) designed to cover the front side of teeth. Made of tooth-colored porcelain, veneers are used to treat spaces between teeth and teeth that are chipped or worn, permanently stained, poorly shaped or slightly crooked.
Smile Make-Overs<
Smile design and its execution require artistic ability and extensive knowledge to ensure a natural looking, beautiful result. Face shape, tooth shape and colour, tooth size, bite and the way the jaw works as well as the age of the patient all play an important part in the decisions ensuring the quality, functionality and longevity of your stunning smile.
Dental Implants<
Dental implants are the modern day solution to missing teeth. Placed directly into the jawbone, a dental implant is the closest thing to your natural tooth. There are two parts to a dental implant which simulate the strong holding ability of the tooth root.
The main part of the dental implant is embedded in the jawbone for an effect that is vastly stronger than dentures are capable of. The second part of the dental implants is a post that protrudes above the jawbone and gumline, to provide a fixed point to attach the tooth restoration that will simulate the crown.
To replace one tooth, a single post is all that is required. For the replacement of multiple teeth, it might be necessary to place several dental implant posts. Looking at a smile with dental implants is like looking at a smile with natural teeth.
CPAP Alternatives for Sleep Disorders<
SLEEP APNEA is the cessation of breathing during sleep for at least 10 seconds and at least five times an hour.Because Smiles by Design believes in treating its patients for their overall health, it continues to train in new areas of dentistry. Smiles by Design staff trained on how to look for symptoms and educate patients about the hazards of having sleep breathing disorders.
If you are diagnosed with mild to moderate sleep apnea, there is an alternative to wearing a CPAP machine. An oral orthodic (mouth device) can be made to wear when sleeping instead of headgear and a noisy machine.
Restorative dentistry<
Maintenance of long-term oral health always centers on a patient's participation in their oral health care. From treatment decisions to home care maintenance, Smiles by Design patients are the most valuable partners.
Smiles by Design makes every effort to provide them with the information needed to make informed decisions regarding treatment options and to thoroughly understand their needs. Patient education is the cornerstone of maintainable oral health.
Sleep Disorder Dentistry<
Smiles by Design staff would help the people who may snore and have signs and symptoms of Sleep Apnea. We can help to diagnose and treat Obstructive Sleep Apnea with an alternative to the "dreaded" CPAP machine. This is definitely for the people who cannot or will not use their CPAP.
If you or a loved one has sleep apnea being treated with CPAP, you probably know how unpleasant it is to wear a mask and hose and have a noisy motor running all night long.
Is it just snoring or is it sleep apnea?<
Not everyone who snores has sleep apnea, and not everyone who has sleep apnea snores. So how do you tell the difference between garden variety snoring and a more serious case of sleep apnea? The biggest telltale sign is how you feel during the day. Normal snoring doesn't interfere with the quality of your sleep as much as sleep apnea does, so you’re less likely to suffer from extreme fatigue and sleepiness during the day.
What’s Your Snore Score?<
Your answers to this quiz will help you decide whether you may suffer from sleep apnea:
- Are you a loud and/or regular snorer?
- Have you ever been observed to gasp or stop breathing during sleep?
- Do you feel tired or groggy upon awakening, or do you awaken with a headache?
- Are you often tired or fatigued during the wake time hours?
- Do you fall asleep sitting, reading, watching TV or driving?
- Do you often have problems with memory or concentration?
If you have one or more of these symptoms you are at higher risk for having obstructive sleep apnea.
What is Sleep Apnea?<
Sleep apnea (AP-ne-ah) is a common disorder in which you have one or more pauses in breathing or shallow breaths while you sleep. Breathing pauses can last from a few seconds to minutes. They often occur 5 to 30 times or more an hour. Typically, normal breathing then starts again, sometimes with a loud snort or choking sound.
Sleep apnea usually is a chronic (ongoing) condition that disrupts your sleep. You often move out of deep sleep and into light sleep when your breathing pauses or becomes shallow. This results in poor sleep quality that makes you tired during the day. Sleep apnea is one of the leading causes of excessive daytime sleepiness.
Sleep apnea often goes undiagnosed. Doctors usually can't detect the condition during routine office visits. Also, there are no blood tests for the condition. Most people who have sleep apnea don't know they have it because it only occurs during sleep. A family member and/or bed partner may first notice the signs of sleep apnea.
The most common type of sleep apnea is obstructive sleep apnea. This most often means that the airway has collapsed or is blocked during sleep. The blockage may cause shallow breathing or breathing pauses.
When you try to breathe, any air that squeezes past the blockage can cause loud snoring. Obstructive sleep apnea is more common in people who are overweight, but it can affect anyone. For example, small children may have enlarged tonsil tissues in their throats, which can lead to obstructive sleep apnea. Suspicious signs and symptoms of sleep apnea may include:
- Snoring - loud and heavy, sometimes accompanied by snorting and gasping
- Long pauses in breathing during sleep
- Morning headache
- Cluster headache
- Excessive daytime sleepiness and unexplained fatigue
- Personality, alertness, memory, and behavior changes
- Memory loss
- Obesity
- Acid Reflux (G.E.R.D.)
- Loss of interest and physical problems related to sex
- In some cases, ADHD and similar conditions
While diagnosis requires confirmation via a Sleep Study (polysomnography) or home sleep test, in conjunction with an appropriate medical specialist, we are privileged to have the opportunity to treat this condition.
Untreated Sleep Apnea is Life Threatening and a Major Health Problem. The biggest problem is shortage of oxygen to the body throughout sleep. This affects every aspect of your health. Poor oxygen intake contributes to premature aging. When left entreated, sleep apnea is believed to take an average of eight years off of a person’s life. Sleep apnea can cause the following:
- High blood pressure - 90% of people with hypertension have sleep apnea and 60% of sleep apnea patients develop hypertension
- Heart attacks and heart disease
- Strokes
- Sudden death
- Depression
- Severe memory loss - in certain cases dementia loss of sexual interest and function
- Fatigue and lack of energy - sleepiness throughout the day. Sleepiness is one of the most common causes of automobile accidents and related injuries
- Headaches as well as aches and pains throughout the body
- Fibromyalgia
- Growth - the inability to reach deep sleep is called Level 3 sleep and is required for growth and healing hormones to be formed and released into the body
- Premature aging - Since everyone’s body relies on inhalation of an adequate amount of oxygen in air 24 hours a day, many other medical conditions heal slowly, or perhaps not at all, in patients who hold their breath for long periods of time hundreds of times each night.
If you or a loved one has a problem with Sleep Apnea or snoring and would like to have a consultation and be tested please call to schedule a "Screening Evaluation" at our office. Smiles by Design staff would love to meet you in person and help you to attain a better quality of life without CPAP.

Crowns, inlays, and onlays can be made in one visit with its own on-site state-of-the-art Cerec 3D CAD-CAM. Only 10% of the dentists in the USA have this technology. The Cerec 3D CAD-CAM computer designs your restoration, then transmits the data to our own Milling hamber which creates your personalized, precision fitting restoration. This means; NO messy impressions, NO temporaries and NO second appointment. We can do it all in one visit, saving you time in your schedule.
Early Oral Cancer Screening with ViziLite Plus Annual Oral Cancer Screening Exams are important.
When oral cancer is found early, treatment can be successful 82% of the time. Unfortunately, when compared to the survival rate of other cancers, the survival rate of oral cancer has not improved greatly over the last 30 years.
Because early detection is a key to survival, it is important to have an annual exam early. The screening exam called ViziLite Plus with TBlue, used in conjunction with a routine head and neck examinations performed by a dentist, can help to find abnormalities that could lead to cancer. That's the kind of screening that could help save lives.
The typical risk factors for oral cancer such as tobacco use and chronic alcohol consumption, may be commonly known, however, a new risk factor called HPV has long been know to cause cervical cancer in women and recent studies show that it may play a role in more than 25% of oral cancer cases.
The human papilloma virus is a common sexually transmitted virus that is thought to be causing oral cancer in an increasingly younger patient population. Few people, if any, even know they have it. That is why Smiles by design recommends the potentially life saving screening exam ViziLite.
Under Armour<
Custom-Fit mouthwear with Armourbite TM technology that prevents your teeth from clenching, pivots your jaw foward, and relieves pressure of the TMJ.
Smiles by design is an authorized provider for this innovative technology. We believe that serious athletic competitors, whether elite or recreational, should consider using a mouthpiece during sports activities. Such appliances not only protect teeth from traumatic injury but may also increase performance.
Many professional athletes are currently relying on the superior performance and protection benefits of Under Armour Performance Mouthwear. But it isn’t just for elite competitors; it is also for all athletes who just want to improve their performance. Your Jaw is the key to unlock the power you never knew was there!
How Does Under Armour Work?<
When you train and compete, your natural reaction is to clench your jaw. Your clenched jaw and teeth compress your temporomandibular joint (TMJ), and may trigger the release of performance-sapping hormones (like cortisol) that produces stress, contributes to fatigue and distraction.
UA Performance Mouthwear helps the human body help itself by unlocking the power of the jaw. Patented Armour Bite TM Technology prevents your teeth from clenching and positions your jaw forward to relieve pressure on the TMJ. Gone are the negative hormones and energy-draining effects, so the body can now unleash its full potential.
Once it is determined which model is right for you, getting your own Under Armour Performance Mouthwear TM is a simple 3-step process:
- The dentist will take your bite impressions.
- Impressions are shipped to the UA lab where a custom designed appliance is produced.
- The mouthwear is shipped back to us for your final fitting.
Benefits you may experience from using Under Armour Performance Mouthwear:
- Increase in Endurance
- Increase in Reaction Time
- Reduces Performance Inhibiting Stress
- Reduces Risk of Traumatic Injury to the Mouth
Whether you need protection in contact sports or you just want to improve your game, Under Armour Performance Mouthwear, with ArmourBite TM Technology, gives every athlete an edge.
